Undemocratic National Park

by admin on 3 February, 2008

I believe that the residents who live inside the National Park should choose who they want to represent them via direct elections. Currently Politicians from the County Council and Welsh Assembly select these people. Currently three members out of 15 in the Pembrokeshire Park do not even live within our County !!!

“It is shocking that within a supposedly democratically advanced society we are still seeing such an undemocratic system. National Parks may be areas of outstanding beauty in Wales but they are a sore on the face of democracy” said Bob Kilmister.

“Those sitting on Park boards have a huge influence on the lives of those living within the Park – they have a statutory duty to foster the economic and social well-being of the communities living within the National Park while protecting the local environment and promoting it to visitors. Many residents come into direct contact with the park over planning issues and the park’s decisions in this area can affect their own homes as well as the public services they use. It is time ALL members of the National Park were elected by residents directly and not appointed by Politicians protecting their vested interests”.
