Use Them or Lose Them – Help Our Post Offices Stay Open

by admin on 14 February, 2008

We organised petitions but the Government totally ignored them.  Now 2,500 Post Offices will close.  That equates to 1 in 5 units.  The review period is from now until the end of March with the closures being announced in June.  Originally this was to be April but the Government requested that this be put back because of the local elections.

In a rural area like Dinas these units are desperately required.  Over 55% of the population in this area is aged over 50.  Travelling via car or bus is expensive and extremely inconvenient.  Fishguard and Newport are both hilly and have extremely poor pedestrian access, with very narrow pavements which are totally unsuitable for the elderly or disabled.

There are two things you can do to help:

1). Write to National Consultation Team, Post Office Ltd, PO Box 2060, Watford, WD18 8ZW and tell them why your Post Office is vital to the community.  Copy this letter to Postwatch, Freepost Postwatch.

2).  Use your local Post Office at every opportunity.  Consider taking out a Post Office credit card.  Get the forms from your local Post Office.  You can cut this card up after receiving it but your local Post Office will be credited with gaining extra business during the review period.  An increase in business during the review period will have more affect than anything else.
